Graz University Library (historical reading room)
“From the oldest book to the latest technology”
Ancient knowledge meets artificial intelligence: the oldest fragment of a double-leaf codex to date has been discovered at the University of Graz (“Graz Mummy Book”). The Egyptian papyrus fragment from 260 BC is 300-400 years older than the first known books.
Over 2000 years later, AI is now revolutionizing the way we collect and process knowledge.

The “Mummy Book”
The oldest known fragment of a codex-like structure was discovered in the Graz University Library and made accessible to the public in June 2023. The so-called “Mummy Book” is made of papyrus and was excavated at the Ptolemaic site of El Hibeh in Egypt. It dates back to 260 BC and has features such as a centerfold, text layout, ink transfer and holes that clearly identify the fragment as a bifolio of a codex-like structure. The find is sensational as it has been identified as the oldest known bifolio and predates similar examples by at least 400 years. Although no comparable material from this period is known, the “mummy book” is proof of the existence of pre-Christian codes and has fundamentally changed the history of the book.
